Review: Adorable Alice by Cassandra Webb

May is National Family Reading Month, as hosted by Scholastic, as you probably know if you have a school or kindy kid in Australia.  I’m not much good at keeping up with all the fabulous ‘photo a day’ or ‘write every day’ blogger challenges, but this week I’m aiming for a picture book review a day!  I’d love to share some ideas for beautiful children’s books you can share with your family this month – or any month.  First cab off the rank is Adorable Alice…

Little Alice is a girl who likes to entertain herself in creative ways, like dress ups, imaginary play and drawing. This week, she decides to explore her senses. She wonders what it would be like if she couldn’t speak, or see, or smell the world around her.  On Monday, she buttons her lips (her mum has a very quiet day!). On Wednesday, she pinches her nose closed with a peg (but that one hurts a bit). On Friday, she covers her eyes with a blindfold, and learns to recognise people around her by using her other senses. Grandma’s clicking knitting needles are easy to pick – and Grandpa, well he smells like peaches!

Alice learns to appreciate different things about her family and home environment by focussing on little things, likes sounds and smells.  The book could be used to discuss the ways we use our senses, to explain the experience of someone with a disability or teach children how to be ‘in the moment’, taking notice of rustling leaves or cooking aromas.   I think young children will easily relate to Alice, as she searches for things to do while the adults in her world go about their daily chores.  I particularly liked the very ‘everyday’ look of the illustrations – from Alice’s untidy pigtails, to the toys strewn up the stairs and dishes in the sink. But maybe that just tells you something about the current state of my house!

With thanks to New Frontier for my review copy.

Thank you Cassandra! I did indeed. It’s a regular bedtime read in our household.

Awesome, we’ve got lots of book clubs at kindy, daycare, school this month I wondered why the overkill, blogging every day in May is challenging, but only because I have so much other work, paid stuff, that I need to be doing! Thanks for your insight on this book 🙂

I’m so impressed by your frequent blogging lately. I’ve read quite a few of them. It must be a fun creative challenge to get that different inspiration every day, even if it’s hard to cram it in between everything else!
