Nothing Up My Sleeve! The Naked Magicians

The Naked Magicians

Well after a solid week of kids’ books, what’s the next logical thing for me to review here at This Charming Mum? Something with full frontal nudity! Put this one on the ‘date night’ list if you’re heading out in Brisbane this month.

Ever asked yourself what Magic Mike would have been like if it had included actual magic?  That’s the thinking behind The Naked Magicians, the hilarious ‘R-rated’ magic show starring two Brisbane boys, who swear their mothers are still proud of them.  The show makes a return to Brisbane from 19-29 June, following successful runs at the Brisbane Comedy Festival and the Adelaide Fringe. I was lucky enough to get a sneak peek (so to speak…)

Performers Mike Tyler and Christopher Wayne have solid theatrical and TV backgrounds and both of them are, indeed, ‘real’ magicians.  You may well come to this show for the nudity – but you’ll stay for the properly tricky tricks, which are all the more intriguing given that these guys literally have nothing up their sleeves.  I was front and centre at the press preview – 2nd row with an excellent view (*cough*) – and I could not tell you how any of the clever collection of rope, card and disappearing tricks were done.   Impressive!  The big laughs came from cringe-worthy audience participation moments, double entendres and sight gags, all delivered with mischievous, good natured humour.  There’s nothing ‘dirty’ going on in this show, despite the obviously suggestive premise.

Naked Magicians

That’s my nervous ‘But what do I do with hands???’ smile.

In addition to being skilled magicians, the boys have clearly been studying the art of the tease, finding many nifty ways to hide their nether regions behind strategically placed props, like top hats and bunnies.  In fact, if you’re expecting to see a showcase of man bits, this may not be the show for you.  But anyone who likes their eye candy packaged up with a good old belly laugh is going to love this combination of novelty nudity and mystifying magic.

The Naked Magicians will bring their mighty fine abs to the Brisbane Powerhouse later this month and conquer the world soon after.   Tickets on sale now!

I heard only good things about their show! Do you know if they will come to Melbourne?

I can’t see Melbourne on the list just yet, but I’m sure it’s only a matter of time.

So I would LOVE this – but I bet it’s not as hilarious as Puppetry of the Penis, I have NEVER laughed so hard. Did you go to a show back in the day?

I have Emily – and yes, once you get over the initial visual hurdle, it is really so funny. This show’s getting a lot of comparisons with that one, but they’re quite different. This is a whole other kind of ‘magic trick’ (makes the eyes water…)

    Great review …

Have you heard the one about the average magician?

He couldn’t pull a rabbit out of a hat but he could pull a hare out of his arse.
