Where The Wild Mums Are
Katie Blackburn & Sholto Walker
Faber & Faber, RRP: $19.99

The day Mum didn’t get dressed and went on strike, Dad called her A Wild Thing and Mum said, ‘Cook your own dinner’, and stomped off upstairs to run a bath.

Any weary mum who’s ever read Maurice Sendak’s classic fantasy Where The Wild Things Are is going to love every page of this clever little tribute.  Following a similar story arc to the original, this tale sees Mum giving herself a time out in the bath and dreaming of the place where the Wild Mums roam.   As the bathroom transforms into a tropical paradise, Mum floats away across time and space to a land where the air is full of promise.

And when the Wild Mums saw her, they shook their magnificent heads and wiggled their magnificent hips and stamped their magnificent feet.

In the wild world, Mum dances and laughs and does party tricks that are SO wild she is crowned the Queen of the Wild Mums!  The illustrations mimic the original, swapping the Wild Things with their terrible claws for Wild Mums with a few cheeky bottles of red.

But as much as Mum enjoys her adventure, she also knows when it’s time to go home.

Until – ‘Enough!’ Mum cried. For the Queen of the Wild Mums suddenly felt a little bit tired and emotional and wished she were with those she loved more than anything in the world.

She gently wakes up from her watery snooze … and Dad has left a cup of tea beside the bath.  She’s home.

Where The Wild Mums Are celebrates an all too familiar parenting conundrum – that moment when you long to escape the family for awhile, only to find that you miss them terribly when they’re not around.  Unlike other more cynical parody picture books, this one has loads of heart and makes it clear that despite a frustrating day, Mum loves her family – and they love her.

This is a perfect gift for any Mum who’s ever wanted a little walk on the wild side.  A portion of proceeds go to women’s charities, too.

Ha ha Grace! I think I’m the one on the far left – with messy hair and still in my slippers at lunch time!

Now this looks like something I would LOVE to read! Ha ha – love it when authors of famous books make adult versions, like Go To Fock to Sleep!

Yes, it’s very sweet. GTFtoSleep is hilarious too, but I kind of liked that this one is a bit less ‘angry’. This mum is more just exhausted than wishing her kids would F off, lol. I guess it depends what kind of day I’m having as to which one would resonate more!

I think I need a copy of this…but we all know there’d be no tea by the bath and all the crap would still be waiting for you…;) Oh, and there’d be a stream of children interrupting the rumpus to ask where their stuff is….

You are right. They missed the bit where the kids bang on the door while Mum sticks her fingers in her ears going ‘la la la’!
