Top 5 Festive Picture Books 2016

And so this is Christmas… It’s pressie shopping time peeps! Time to get those orders in for gorgeous new release festive picture books in time to fill up stockings. Here’s my Top 5 cream of the crop for Christmas 2016.

Festive Picture Book Pig The Elf Cover Image Pig The Elf by Aaron Blabey
Scholastic Press RRP: $16.99

Australian kids have fallen in love with the obnoxious pug Pig. In fact, some of these books are getting OS releases next year, too. It seems people everywhere connect with this anti-hero dog, who learns harsh lessons about manners, friendship and life skills in each story.

Pig embodies our worst qualities; he’s selfish, greedy and rude. It usually takes his long suffering housemate Trevor – and/or a nasty accident – to set him straight.

This time around, Pig’s Christmas list is in focus. While Trevor is grateful for any surprise he finds under the tree, Pig would like 4 skateboards, a unicorn and the power of flight – and that’s just the start!

This book is obviously a fun Christmas gift, but could also be useful if given ahead of the big day if kids are sorting out their requests for Santa!

Night Before Christmas New Illustrated Edition The Night Before Christmas by Clement Clarke Moore & Helene Magisson
New Frontier Publishing RRP: $24.99

Festive picture books don’t get much more festive than this. This classic Christmas poem was written in the early 1800s, but remains a favourite with new versions appearing every year. In this edition, the text is traditional but delightful illustrations by French/Australian artist Helene Magisson breathe new life into the story. Exquisite colours conjure up the magic of Christmas through the eyes of children, whilst the old-fashioned text offers some new vocabulary for discussion.

Christmas Picture Book All I Want For Christmas Is Rain Cover Image All I Want For Christmas Is Rain by Cori Brooke & Megan Forward
New Frontier Publishing RRP: $24.99

If you’re looking for a truly Australian Christmas story, this is it! Forget your snowflakes and sled rides, what this farming community really needs this summer is a good wet season. When a young girl sees the stress her rural family is experiencing during a drought, she visits Santa with a very special wish. This book is refreshing for showcasing a hot, dry Australian Christmas – but also another terrific reminder that the ‘little things’ in life can be more valuable than all the toys in Santa’s sack.

Sleigh Ride Festive Picture Book Cover Image Sleigh Ride by Leroy Anderson, Mitchell Parish & Matt Shanks
Scholastic Australia RRP: $19.99

Sleigh Ride manages to blend a whole bunch of Christmas traditions into one rollicking ride for Aussie kids. This book grabs a popular, boppy Christmas carol and brings it to life with Aussie animal illustrations. It’s lovely weather for a sleigh ride together with you… goes the tune, while kids can giggle at koalas and kangaroos hitting the beach in a sleigh drawn by an ice cream van! Don’t forget the esky! Read along while Human Nature and Jessica Mauboy belt out the song on the accompanying CD.

I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas Cover Image I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas by John Rox & Simon Williams
Scholastic Australia RRP: $19.99

In a similar vein, this book features Miranda Tapsell on CD, sharing the charming kids’ carol about asking Santa for a pet hippo. The hero of this story is a super cute kitten, who works hard on his persuasive wish list and ends up with the (very large) best friend of his dreams.

All of these festive picture books make ideal gifts for kids of all ages or even gifts for teachers, librarians or carers as the year comes to an end. Shop now for pre-Christmas delivery.

I really want to get pig the elf. We just introduced pig the Pug and she loved it. The hippopotamus one sounds good too.

Pig the Elf has been beneficial in helping my lot make smaller Christmas lists this year! The Hippopotamus one is good fun. I’ve been playing it in the car 🙂
